After years of running but not including and serious stretching or  strengthening in my program, Ruth Ann’s personalized program really  helped me see the light. She has a technique that not only instructs  but fully educates one on the importance and reasons for complete  physical fitness. Ask any question and she has or will get the answer.  She also, with her very positive enthusiasm and personal model of  physical fitness, inspired me to get serious about stretching. I credit  her for helping me to get rid of my stiffness, minor aches and pains  and probably extending my years of running enjoyment.

Back pain plagued me through most of the 2002-03 mountain bike season, until one day back spasms and incredible pain left me bed-ridden for over a week. An MRI showed that I had degenerative arthritis in my lower back, in addition to bulging disks–and I was only 24! The doctor prescribed physical therapy, but that didn’t help at all. I felt so disappointed that I couldn’t ride my bike, and the pain was almost constant. I decided to meet with Ruth Ann. She put me on a program to strengthen my core in hopes of reducing the back pain, and it worked. We met weekly for several months in which she increased the difficultly of the exercises and gave me new and challenging ones to work on. She e-mailed me several times a week to check my progress and see if I had questions. Ultimately, she taught me how to take care of my core and how to feel comfortable in the weight room–a place I’d never been before. I’m now back on the bike and have been competing with great success in 2004.  I recommend Ruth Ann to any athlete recovering from an injury or looking to improve core strength.

Ruth Ann Clarke possesses a unique combination of knowledge, understanding  and encouragement to help set me on the road to the core strength I need. I  truly feel safe and challenged at the same time. I went from a clumsy, weak,  reluctant beginner to someone who can show up at a group fitness class and  hold my own – and enjoy it! I have been working with Ruth Ann for over a year and am continually finding that I feel better and better.

Over twenty years ago I was unable to put weight on my knees—I could not even kneel on a bed without a great deal of pain. After just a few months of working with Ruth Ann I was able to put my full weight on my knees. When I have stressed my knees in tai chi, for example, the pain is gone in a day or two. Ruth Ann tailors her work with me according to my needs.

Before I met Ruth Ann, I had talked to my doctor about hip and neck pain that were waking me up at night. After only two or three weeks of working with Ruth Ann, I was sleeping through the night. The neck pain was the result of a whiplash over 25 years ago. The neck injury had affected my ability to type and limited me to no more than 2 hours a day at the keyboard. After a couple of months with Ruth Ann I was able to work for several hours at the keyboard. I had also been limited to the amount of weight that I could lift without affecting my neck and this is no longer an issue.

At the age of 65, I literally have more and better physical function than I did 20 years ago. My posture is better. People have commented on how much more vital I appear and that I have trimmed down considerably. The most important thing to me is that I feel good. My everyday quality of life has been enormously enhanced.

The amazing thing to me is that I continue to experience an increase in strength and ability. I feel stronger and lighter. I am able to do things that I thought I would never be able to do again.

Ruth Ann is patient, encouraging and challenging while keeping me safe and inspired to do better. Her level of skill and knowledge are impressive. To top it all off, she has a good sense of humor and makes the sessions fun. I feel very fortunate to have found someone of Ruth Ann’s caliber and kindness.
